Operation
The MAX202CSEND is an RS-232 transceiver that uses integrated charge pump circuits to convert a single +5V supply into dual ±10V voltages required for the RS-232 interface. The device contains two drivers (transmitters) and two receivers that comply with EIA/TIA-232E and V.28 specifications.
The transmitters maintain ±5V output levels at data rates exceeding 120kbps when loaded according to the EIA/TIA-232E specification. The receivers have input thresholds of 0.8V (low) and 1.7V (high), which allows for compatibility with TTL/CMOS logic levels and improves the noise margin for RS-232 signals.
The device includes 0.1µF capacitors for voltage generation and is available in a SOIC16 package that saves board space. The inverting transmitters include internal pull-up resistors that force unused outputs to a low level when open.
Shutdown Mode
The MAX202CSEND does not include a shutdown mode (SHDN) in its standard version, unlike other models in the MAX series. However, other similar devices in the MAX200–MAX209/MAX211/MAX213 family include a low-power mode that can consume from 1µA to 10µA.
In shutdown mode, the transmitter outputs are disabled and their leakage current is less than 1mA, even if the transmitter output is forced between 0V and (VCC + 6V). Below -0.5V, the transmitter output is clamped to ground with a 1kΩ series impedance.
The receivers of the MAX202CSEND are not affected by a shutdown mode as it is not implemented in this model. In other models with shutdown mode, all receivers except R4 and R5 are placed in a high-impedance state.
Compatibility
The MAX202CSEND is compatible with the RS-232 and V.28 standard, allowing its use in industrial and data communication applications. Its RS-232 outputs can handle loads of up to ±10mA with an output resistance of 300Ω.
The device supports an RS-232 input voltage range of ±30V, which provides excellent immunity to transients and noise. The 0.5V hysteresis on the receivers ensures clean transitions even with slow or noisy input signals.
